8 Early Signs of Dental Trouble

While everyone knows that they should have a dental exam once or twice a year, there are times when an unscheduled visit is necessary. How do you know when dental trouble is on the horizon? There are at least eight signs.

1. Sensitive Teeth

When was the last time you could drink a hot or cold beverage without flinching? There are numerous reasons for dental sensitivity, and none of them are good. If you are experiencing increased sensitivity, then it may be a sign that something is wrong.

2. Toothache

Are you experiencing continued pain in your jaw? If so, it is usually caused by a toothache. While a toothache can be a sign of gum disease, the more common cause is a cavity. If you suspect you have a cavity, it is best to see your dentist as soon as possible so he or she can take care of it for you.

3. Bad Breath

While bad breath is not a concern if you just had garlic and onion pasta, persistent bad breath may be a sign of something more severe. For example, bad breath could be a sign of gum disease. Bad breath can also be a sign of poor dental hygiene, though, in which case, brushing twice a day and flossing can help.

4. Jaw Pain

It is true that a toothache is often the cause of jaw pain, but there are several other problems it can stem from as well. For example, if your pain is accompanied by clicking sounds, then you may have gingivitis, TMJ, arthritis, an injury, or sinus problems.

5. Dry Mouth

Chronic dry mouth is more often a symptom of something, but it can, unfortunately, lead to tooth decay. Usually, the cause of dry mouth is because of medication or an underlying medical condition. Regardless, your dentist can likely recommend ways to replenish moisture.

6. Fractured Tooth

You should always go to a dentist if you fracture or lose a tooth. While injuries can be the reason for such a sudden loss, there may be other issues that led to the weakening of the tooth.

7. Discoloration

While teeth naturally lose their white shine over time, a drastic change in color is alarming, and it can indicate other problems. Most often, the discoloration of teeth is because of poor diet and habits, which remove enamel and damage the teeth.

8. Mouth Sores and Bleeding

If you are experiencing mouth sores that last more than a week or your gums are bleeding daily, then you need to schedule an appointment with your dentist. These are signs of possible bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.

If you are experiencing any of the issues above, don’t postpone a dental exam. Call a dentist, like a Cary, NC dentist, and schedule an appointment.
